A Little info on Heat Pumps

Are heat pumps really a cost effective investment in the home? Do heat pumps really double as air conditioning units?  Among residential homeowners, an assortment of fallacies surrounds the heat pump. An understanding the benefits and functions of the heat pump enables the savvy consumer to make an informed decision. A premier west metro Atlanta HVAC company debunks myths behind the heat pump.

MYTH: Heat pumps emit hot air, only.

Heat pumps work like heating and cooling system. During warmer temperatures, the heat pump emits hot air outside, reversing the transfer of cold air outdoors in the winter. Heat pumps do not work well for temperatures below 35 degrees Fahrenheit. However, these heating and cooling systems conserve energy as the heat pump generates up to three times more heat than the energy it actually consumes.

MYTH: Switching over to a heat pump guarantees a definite energy savings.

Upgrading an HVAC system to a heat pump does not guarantee an automatic savings.  Wilson Air Conditioning Service, Inc. asserts that four factors are attributable to a heat pump’s efficiency: Climate combined with the electricity rate, fuel efficiency of both the heat pump and HVAC system – all influence overall energy savings.

MYTH: New heat pumps and air conditioners are not any more energy efficient than older models.

On the contrary, newer heat pumps and air conditioners offer substantial efficiency to outmoded models. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) measures the cooling efficiency of air conditioners and heat pumps. A higher SEER rating affords better efficiency. Units more than 8 years old generally have a SEER rating of 7.0 or less. Meanwhile, a 16.0 SEER is a common feature among high efficiency models.

MYTH:  All Atlanta HVAC contractors provide the same caliber of heat pump installation and maintenance service.

Spanning more than four decades, Wilson Air Conditioning Service has been providing a full menu of heating and cooling services in the west metro Atlanta area. From designing to maintaining heat pumps, furnaces, condensers, air conditioners and other Heating and cooling components, Wilson Air Conditioning Service, Inc. is synonymous with the best Atlanta HVAC company, serving:  Powder Springs, Marietta, Hiram, Dallas, and all of the west Atlanta area.

How to avoid 90+% of ALL heating or cooling system failures.

Image

From Wilson Air Conditioning Service Technician – Jimmy McWhorter.

Dirt. Five year olds love it, plants can’t live without it, and your’re breathing it in every day. Not just breathing it in – you’re paying to inhale the largest cause of home’s duct and allergy problems.

You’re probably thinking that’s an exaggeration.  But the simple truth is that you are paying to run your heating and cooling system, more and more as the weather gets colder or soon – warmer.  And since dirt is the number one cause of system failure – 90% of all failures, in fact- chances are good that dirt is keeping your system from running at peak efficiency.

Before you invest in a family set of gas masks or prepare for a nomadic existence in the Sahara (hey, at least then you’t be paying  for the dirt), you might want to give your heating and cooling professional a call!

“Your system works hard,” says Jimmy McWhorter, it gets dirty and has to be cleaned regularly.  Scheduling the maintenance for your home’s heating and cooling systems is as important as changing the oil in your car – if you don’t do it, eventually you’ll have a breakdown.”

There are a few questions to ask yourself before having your system cleaned:

  • How long has it been since your HVAC system was cleaned? Systems should have regular tune-ups, which most companies can schedule with a Maintenance Agreement (or include cleaning with our Platinum Energy Saver’s Club membership)
  • Are there pets in the home?
  • Do any family members experience burning eyes, nose, or throat while in the house?
  • Does your climate have high humidity?
  • Do any family members show symptoms of mild to severe allergies?

Jimmy says “System failure caused by dirt, as well as expensive repairs, can be avoided with a little preventative maintenance. Most people don’t realize how much money they will save by making sure their system is clean and runs efficiently.”

Learning the precautions are part of Wilson’s effort to educate the public on how to save time, energy, and money.  Wilson Air Conditioning Service wants to show homeowners certain neglected maintenance items  can lead to thousands of dollars in repairs and/or complete system replacement.

How to Keep More Cool Cash (in a HOT Summer)

Before your cooling system kicks into high gear, take a look at how to save money this summer and keep your cool. You’ll like these energy-saving tips…

  • Set your thermostat at 79° or higher. Each degree setting below 78° will increase your energy consumption by approximately 8%.
  • Use bath and kitchen fans sparingly when the air conditioner is operating. They can pull out an entire home’s cooling in one hour.
  • Inspect and clean both the indoor and outdoor coils. The indoor coil is like a magnet because it is constantly wetted during the cooling season. Dirt build on the indoor coil is the single most common cause of poor efficiency. The outdoor coil must also be checked for dirt build and cleaned when necessary.
  • Check the refrigerant level. The fuild circulating in your air conditioner is what keeps your home cool. But like most things under pressure, it tried to escape! If there’s too little or too much refrigerant, your system will not work properly. Call us to check it out for you.
  • Reduce the cooling load. For example, effectively shade south and west windows. When possible, delay heat-generating activities, such as dishwashing, until later in the evening on hot days.
  • Keep the house closed tight during the day. If practical, ventilate at night natural or with fans.

Out with the old, in with the cool

If you have an older central air conditioner (12 years or older), it may cost more in energy and repairs than replacing it with a completely new system.  We have always recommended and installed higher SEER equipment and often, with proper maintenance, our systems can (and do) last 20+ years.

When buying new, choose a model with a high-efficiency rating, such as  system that has an Energy Star® label with SEER ratings of 15 or greater. Other features to look for include:

  • Quiet operation. New ones are much quieter.
  • fan Only” switch, so you can use the unit for nighttime ventilation to substantially reduce air conditioning costs.
  • Filter “check light” to remind you to check filter. Great feature!
  • Automatic-delay fan switch to turn off the fan a few minutes after the compressor turns off.

If you’ll follow a few of these tips or have us evaluate your system, we can show you how to keep even more dollars from going into thin air. This is our job…..to keep you comfortable and save some money! Give us call at 770-943-1613 if we can help you or your friends. Schedule your appointment here http://wilsonac.com/contact.html

Guest Blogger – Wilson Air Conditoning Service Technician, Jason Perritt ,”A Quick and Simple Home Investment”

Routine air conditioning/heat system tune-ups are among the best home improvement investments you can make.  That’s because tune-ups improve your system’s efficiency and increase it’s lifespan, saving you operating dollars, postponing replacement dollars, and keeping you comfortable at the same time. Not only that, you can avoid problems with mold build-up that can harm your breathing space.

It’s the same principle as routine dental cleaning and annual medical appointments. Nothing’s wrong, and you want to keep it that way.  But some folks let the “ounce of prevention” opportunity pass right on by, thanks to a misguided impression that it’s just too much trouble.

Yet tune-ups are simple and quick and very much worth a minor inconvenience that can save you a good bit of time and money in the long run. Basically, a licensed professional (that’s us!) will:

  • Clean evaporator and condenser coils, as needed, and straighten bent fins.
  • Check all electrical components and controls.
  • Oil motor and shaft bearings.
  • Check the condenser.
  • Examine fan belts and replace if frayed or worn.
  • Calibrate thermostat.
  • Check to see it that the system is properly charged with refrigerant and that there are no leaks.
  • Check filters. (Regular filters should be replaced at least every 3 months.)

Oh, and you can keep a watch on this on your own. While many homeowners choose to shade their condensers with trees and shrubs to improve efficiency, you’ll want to watch to make sure vegetation doesn’t grown around the condenser and restrict airflow.

Most tune-up tasks are too extensive for the average homeowner – because of the risk of electrical shock and the potential for shorting the electrical components.  But one of our technicians can tend to these things in a very short time.

Think of it as a way to save money while avoiding a whole lot more trouble later on. Equipment failure in the heat of August or the cold of January is never as fun as a preventative measure taken in the spring or fall.
